2020

NATIONAL CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

I have pleasure in reporting on the principal interests and activities of the Cecchetti Society of Southern Africa for the year.

Examination statistics reveal that a total of three thousand, four hundred and twenty-three candidates were entered for examinations throughout the country during 2019, the figure of which signifies two hundred and ninety-six fewer entrants than in 2018. A two-year cycle continues to be the norm and whilst a marginal decline in Grade, Intermediate Foundation, Intermediate, Advanced I, Associate, Licentiate Assessment, and Maestro Enrico Cecchetti Diploma categories was evident, increased entries materialised in Test, Advanced II, Associate Diploma and Licentiate levels.

In the 2019 examination year, the region of Cape Town entered the most Test candidates, KwaZulu-Natal the greatest number of Grade and Vocational entries and Johannesburg the highest total of qualifying candidates.

Eleven members wrote Ms. Clare Faulkner’s related subjects’ papers last year and results were once again outstanding. Associate Diploma, Paper One was written by Carine Bonthuys, Chase Bosch, Angelique Dee, Nicole Dando, Johanna Greyling, Yolanda Kruger, Thabang Mabaso, Nadia van der Merwe, Jo-Anne Wyngaard and Heidi Pretorius. Congratulations are due to the top three achievers Angelique Dee, Carine Bonthuys and Yolanda Kruger, who scored 100%, 98% and 98%, respectively. Licentiate Paper Two was written by Shan Crawley, who achieved an exceptional mark of 99 %.

The highlight of the 2019 calendar was unequivocally the National Summer School, which took place at Hilton College, KwaZulu – Natal, from the 6th to the 12th of December, inclusive.

Mr. Ralph Tiaden, Manager of the Fleur de Lys Club and the Hilton College staff excelled, as always, to provide the Society with unstinting and meticulous organisational backing, whilst the KZN Summer School support committee delivered distinctive assistance in so many facets of preparation.

A popular guest teaching faculty, comprising Ms. Kate Simmons, Mr. Jonathan Payn, Ms. Nicolette Loxton, and Ms. Lynn Totham indisputably enriched both teacher and student attendees throughout the six-day convocation. CSSA’s Honoured Patron, Dr. Eduard Greyling delighted attendees with his co-ordination of a most enjoyable Coppélia mime workshop and further served on the esteemed panel to adjudicate the Cyril Beaumont Bursary Award Competition, as well as South Africa’s auditions for the 2020 CICB Competition.

Integral to the success of the Summer School was wonderful musical accompaniment provided by pianists, Mrs. Eirene Candy, Mr. Danie Fourie, Mr. Ferdi Geyer and Mr. Louis Maritz, whom we value more than words are able to express. The contributions of guest lecturers and participants such as Chase Bosch, Nicole Ferreira, Charmaine Holloway, Thabang Mabaso, Margie Marnewick and Matthew Willman gave selflessly of their time and expertise to further inspire attendees.

The incorporation of the Cyril Beaumont Bursary Competition, during Summer School, proved stimulating, with candidates, Donavin Cicatello (Johannesburg – student of Ms. José Pretorius), Tamlyn Preston (Johannesburg – student of Ms. Anneliese Venter) and Sumé Wille (Cape Town – 2

student of Mrs. Karen Koen-Jooste) ultimately reaching the finals. Congratulations are extended to Sumé Wille, who was the winner of the R65, 000.00 monetary awards.

The members of the Council of Management applaud and acknowledge those regional branches who tirelessly support Summer School initiatives, by means of the provision of generous subsidies to ensure that regional members are able to attend Summer School and, who furthermore, exhibit immense foresight by regularly donating funds towards the Cyril Beaumont Bursary fund, so as to foster the advancement of generations of future dancers in our country.

Years ago, as a young teenager, I was a member of the Girl Guide Movement, whose motto, “Be Prepared,” is a value I have striven to uphold during my life’s journey. I could not, however, have felt less prepared when the National State of Disaster was declared by South Africa’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa, on the 15th March 2020. As “lockdown” descended upon our nation, with resultant consequences to all members of this Society and, as we grappled with the complexities involved, the strength and support extended to me in abundance by the Council of Management and Office Administration was, and still is, phenomenal. I cannot adequately express the extent of my profound appreciation to them and, likewise, to you the members of CSSA, for your forbearance whilst, together with Council of Management and Office Administration, I endeavoured to comprehend all that was happening, in order to relay whatever guidance was available at any given time.

Council hopes that the COVID-19 Risk Assessment Course provided, free of charge, to members was helpful in some small way.

In June 2020, and in my capacity as Chair of Cecchetti International Classical Ballet I wrote:

“Cecchetti International Classical Ballet (CICB), could by no means have anticipated the catastrophic COVID-19 pandemic which, in CICB’s twenty-third year of existence, has resulted in health and safety consequences for human beings throughout the world; devastated the global economy; and severely impaired both the well-being of the art of Classical Ballet and the livelihood of the dance fraternity, universally. Despite online initiatives, the situation has, in many instances, compromised the development of pedagogic and artistic dance training for thousands of children, teenagers, and young adults who are aspiring to the profession. A distinct example being the young dancers who were to participate in the CICB Competition which was to be hosted by Australia in July of this year.

Dancers and dance educators are, nevertheless, resilient, steadfast, and resourceful by nature! No less in this time of crisis!”

The hearts of CSSA members bleed for Megan de Oliveira (student of Mesdames Beverley and Kerry Hall), Teegan Megaw (student of Mrs. Karen Koen-Jooste), and Tarlia Samuels (student of Mesdames Yvonne Barker and Patricia McIntosh) who were selected by adjudicators Ms. Kate Simmons, Mr. Jonathan Payn and Dr. Eduard Greyling to take their places of honour to compete in the 2020 CICB competition. The aspiring dancers have suffered great disappointment as a result of the cancellation of the event, and we hope that their resilience and determination will result in the evolvement of other worthy opportunities for the advancement of their careers.

The deepest thoughts of the organisations of both CSSA and CICB are conveyed to Cecchetti Ballet Australia Inc., and in particular, Australian delegates, Carole Hall, and Anne Butler, for the 3 the distressing situation in which they have been irrepressibly placed. Their strength and unwavering determination, during exceedingly difficult and escalating circumstances, are admired and greatly respected by us all.

As a result of complex pandemic developments, it has sadly become prudent for Cecchetti Ballet Australia Inc. to postpone the hosting of the CICB Competition until July 2022.

Members of CSSA should be aware that consequent to the cancellation of CSSA examinations during 2020, no revenue from this source of activity will germinate for the period January 2020 to approximately mid-2021. The Society has, nevertheless, continued to uphold the payment of monthly salaries, wages, and honoraria, by means of drawing capital and/or interest from investments, if and when absolutely necessary.

Further to notifications previously sent to members, I confirm that, for economic reasons, Summer School 2021 has been postponed to 2022.

During Lockdown, the Council of Management and Office Administration have remained exceptionally busy.

A new CSSA web site is almost underway, and immeasurable gratitude is extended to Mrs. Elesia Ceronio for her many hours of committed involvement and patience to co-ordinate this enterprise.

In addition, a new publication of the Grade Variation Book of Technical Notes and, a separate new Grade Variation Music Book will imminently become available. The new Grade Variation Book of Technical Notes will be sent, free of charge, to all present Active Members and Associates (who have already purchased the old book). Members will be able to purchase the new publication of the Grade Variation Music Book from Headquarters. Further details will be notified in due course. My sincere thanks to Ms. Jennifer Louw for the unstinting dedication of her time to oversee the music publication as well as to assist with typing and proof-reading of technical notes.

It is an honour and privilege to serve as a council member and as National Chairman of CSSA. I am acutely appreciative of your continued trust in me and in the members of the Council of Management. I restate incalculable thanks to all those who selflessly and significantly continue to contribute to the posterity of this Society and to the affinity of its people.

For loyal and interminable service to the Cecchetti Society of Southern Africa, thank you in particular:
